People from all around the world are using their smartphones to create art more often than ever. For some it’s just a hobby, while other have turned the practice into a job. Thanks to the power of social media, it’s now easier to get noticed as a photographer than it ever was before. Instagram is one of the most popular social media platforms, and it’s almost exclusively filled with photos – some of which are taken with a smartphone.

However, simply owning a smartphone won’t make you rich and famous. Similarly, neither will owning the most expensive DSLR available on the market. But that can change if you divert your focus on what’s really important: understanding your flaws and improving your photography skills. Here are 3 great tips that will improve your smartphone photography skills.

Read About the Camera Software

The first obvious step to taking better photos with your smartphone is to read the manual. If you haven’t already, you will be surprised to find out just how powerful your smartphone camera is, especially if you own one of the latest generation flagships. Smartphone cameras have come a long way, with some newer ones packing extremely powerful photography hardware and software.

Both iPhone and Android phones pack hundreds of camera settings that are just waiting to be discovered by a photography enthusiast. The majority of smartphone cameras are now capable of complex settings, such as burst mode, bokeh, and HDR. Sure, you could settle for “auto” and let the camera do its best, but not automated setting will ever be as good as one that you select on your own, based on surroundings and experience.

Use Available Photography Apps

Besides knowing the capabilities of your smartphone camera, you should consider installing a photography app. There are literally thousands of photography apps on iTunes, Google Play, and Microsoft Store that can easily improve the quality of your photographs.

A lot of these apps can give you that extra layer of control that will put you ahead of everyone else. There are apps that offer a wide range of settings that can help you during your photo shoots. Furthermore, as you might already know, post-processing is an important part of any photographer’s job. Rest assured that there are apps for post-processing as well.

Thanks to the abundance of apps that are available at your fingertips, you shouldn’t be afraid to try them all out. Maybe not all, but be sure to try more than just one app and settle for the ones that you are most comfortable with.

Understand Lighting

Once you’ve accustomed yourself with your smartphone camera and all the available photography apps, it’s time to move on to something more serious: lighting. You can have the best smartphone camera in the world if you don’t know how to take advantage of lighting conditions. Natural light is a photographer’s best friend.

You’ll often hear photographers say that they dislike having photoshoots during overcast skies. This happens because the amount of natural light during overcasts is simply not enough for equipment-less photography. As a smartphone photographer, you’re in the same situation, because there are limitations to what you can do with a smartphone. To get the best images possible, make sure you focus on situations where natural light is in abundance.
